After serving the students of New Orleans as a science teacher for 38 years, Hazel Bolds has left her classroom at 42 Charter for the last time.

She was recognized for her contribution to the education of New Orleans youth by her peers during a special ceremony.

“She’s been a model of perseverance and innovation,” said 42 Principal Jared Lamb. “She’s someone who continued to embody a growth mindset and did really well at learning to teach virtually and hybrid.”

Fellow teacher Lisa Broussard, who has known Bolds since 2015, said Ms. Bolds was the epitome of selflessness.

“She was always willing to lend a helping hand. I can recall on countless occasions her offering to lend a hand decorating my classroom, covering my bulletin boards for state testing, and checking papers and recording grades when we were all trying to beat a ‘grades due’ timeline. It was just in her to help others.

“She was also a walking , talking book of encouragement. Her demeanor with staff and students was always the same, soft spoken and encouraging,” Broussard added. “We will miss her presence at 42, but her lessons she taught us will live on forever.”
